Staking a claim, 2020
Acrylic on canvas, 140x120cm, framed in Tasmanian oak.
$3000
Staking a Claim explores themes of exploration and land ownership and how it has been venerated across art and craft forms for centuries. Combined with her own interest in travel and contemporary practice of marking time and space through the act of painting - Staking a claim considers where the human inquisitive spirit transforms into a desire to conquer and own. Loosely based on a traditional narrative painting and combined with still life conventions, Staking a claim depicts a quest undertaken by two Royal Doulton ceramic figures. Shown to be exploring a new land and taking hold of it, it calls to mind colonial travel but equally so, any number of kitsch ornaments displayed in a western grandmother's house. It is a playfully constructed yet serious consideration of how history continues to be marked and collected throughout the centuries.

Acrylic on canvas, 120x110cm, framed in Tasmanian oak
$2600.00
From The Golden Pantomime Exhibition
Art Gallery of Ballarat
1 August 2020 - 7 February 2021
This work is part of the series ‘Consequences of fire’ that focused on the impact of the 2019 / 2020 Australian bush fires that burnt 17 million hectares of the Australian landscape. Failed Custodians reflects on the responsibility that human beings have to care for the natural environment but in recent times have failed to do so. The work attributes the cause of the recent fires to our government's inaction on climate change and indifference to environmental protection. The red poppies are a memorial to the 3 billion animals that died as a consequence to this failure in custodianship. .
